And in the twelfth year, on the seventh day of Ielool, the month of reaping, he climbed the hill without the city walls and looked seaward; and he beheld the ship coming with the mist.
Then the gates of his heart were flung open, and his joy flew far over the sea. And he closed his eyes and prayed in the silences of his soul.
*Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet.
Prayerfulness expresses freely, for in harmony with our nature as freedom. There is a spontaneity in prayer from the Heart. This prayerfulness is neither inside nor outside, though, for most, spiritual devotion begins with a sense of outward expression, then inward and outward expression, then inward expression. This is still with direction. Pure Prayer is neither, at times being sensed resting inward, at other times sensed moving outward. Being spontaneous, one does not decide how to pray: there is no how. While this prayerfulness might be expressed outwardly or inwardly in word, this Prayer arises from quiet, for our true nature is Quietness. Still, regardless of expression, prayerfulness itself is untouched by emotion and may often feel empty of all natural feeling, while underlying is a sense, or feeling, not of natural sense. One finds in this quietness an unspeakable eloquence, in this emptiness a resplendent fullness. Silence can be said to be silences, such is the immensity of this singular Grace. For such silences to arise in the body, this is joy beyond all happiness. What is one to do to know this joy? Surrender, surrender even the idea there is a means to this grace of Prayer. What is left? Be still, be quiet, relax. Welcome Love, Love will show Itself. Pure Prayer is Love, Love is Pure Prayer.
